The Mediterranean island’s coastal districts of Limassol and Paphos from Thursday evening ()have enter an almost complete lockdown which is to last until November 30.
In a bid by the government to contain the alarming spread of coronavirus – especially in these two districts – the curfew will be from 8pm to 5am. And movement in or out of these two districts will be prohibited almost entirely at all times.
“Since October 28, there have been 2644 new cases and eight deaths. A total of 1798 of these new cases are individuals from Limassol and Paphos districts, that is a percentage of 68%, while seven out of the eight deaths are people who were permanent residents either in Limassol or in Paphos,” he added.
Exceptions to the movement ban to those districts will apply to essential workers such as doctors, nurses, teachers etc as well as for travel purposes to Larnaca and Paphos airports.
For the rest of the island, the state of play remains almost unchanged even though Health Minister Constantinos Ioannou did announce some additional stricter measures. Such as the banning of visits to hospitals and elderly peoples’ homes.
In more detail, the measures in Limassol and Paphos provide that gatherings in public places – playgrounds, parks, squares, dams, picnic areas, beaches, sidewalks and marinas – are prohibited. Except for sports purposes, provided that they do not exceed two people, excluding children of those parents who do exercise.
It is allowed to be present at gatherings in homes with a maximum number of 10 people per house, including minors. Religious ceremonies – weddings, baptisms, funerals – are allowed with a maximum number of 10 people but church services are to be held without the presence of people.
Public and private lyceums and Higher Education Institutions have to proceed with distance education as from Monday, November 16. Kindergartens, primary schools and gymnasiums will continue to operate normally.
Public services, that is the wider public sector and Local Government Authorities, will operate with security personnel for urgent matters and serving citizens for emergencies only.
Restaurants, taverns, cafes, pizzerias, pubs, breweries, snack bars, bars, cafes, and restaurants within canteens are to suspend their operation, with the exception of services concerning home delivery and take-away.
